Sam Gilliam
Sam Gilliam, Jr., was born on November 30, 1933, in Tupelo, Mississippi. He died in June 2022 at the age of 88.
As a child, Gilliam enjoyed painting and was actively encouraged by his teachers. In 1955, Gilliam received his bachelor’s degree in fine art, and held his first solo art exhibition. Gilliam entered the U.S. Army in 1956. After his discharge, he returned to the University of Louisville and received a master’s degree in painting. Gilliam’s work is featured in galleries throughout the world. Throughout his career, Gilliam was committed to teaching youth the foundations of art.
